What is Creativity?

If you are reading this article, you are probably an artist of some sort, right? Or maybe you
are a person who is just interested in reading about life, or maybe you are neither, and you just have nothing to do and so you say to yourself let’s see what this guy writes about this week! Or maybe ----- (fill in the blank). It doesn’t matter what the reason is that you read what I have to say here today. You will benefit in some way from it no matter what. How? No matter who you feel you are (an artist or not) you are “a creator” who is constantly in the process of making something - your own life experience.

Creativity is something that we all do no matter who we are, or where we are, even if we
are doing absolutely nothing! Creativity in its general understanding was meant for special
people, or artists, or people who were very talented or even very smart. Traditionally we would often picture a painter, a writer, a chef, a designer, a musician, or someone who at least has a specific“ art form” spending time alone in the process of making something “noteworthy.” Something to be shared with others or to sell, or something to be done just for the sheer pleasure of the process, whatever that may happen to be. Well, you might say - “I don’t feel like I am any of those, or I really don’t do any of that artist stuff, so how would this apply to me?!” Ready? Okay. Every second of everyday you are alive, you are in a relationship with everything around you (especially with yourself). You are in a process of sending out, and receiving energy and information all the time through your thoughts, words, actions and your five (or six!) senses. How you interpret this process or movement of energy, dictates what type of experience you have. You are constantly “creating” an experience for yourself, and for those around you, even when you are not aware of what is being “created.” But how does this prove you are an artist?

Creativity is nothing more than taking an idea, or a thought or some materials you have
around you and rearranging them into something. Even if you feel you are not “talented” like so and so, you can still do something about that which “moves you.” As long as you are having (hopefully) a positive experience, it doesn’t matter what you do. In the end, it is all about the experience you are having. Artists are just people who have found something they love to do (no matter what that is) and decided (because it feels good) to do it as much as possible. In time, through repetition, they happened to become good at what they were doing, and now want to share that something special (their love) with others.

The only difference between the “artist” and you, is how much love and energy is being
put into whatever is being done, and then sharing that with others (or yourself) and repeating that process. Read that sentence again. What is something that you do everyday? If you bring this enthusiasm to whatever you are doing, no matter what it is, it will be done with love and that’s what will make it special- that is what will make it art. I guess that you would make you the artist, no?

p.s. The last line here was said with a horrible “trying to sound french but can’t” accent. It
shall not be repeated again!
